CONTENTS Message from Mrs. O MESSAGE FROM MRS. 0 Summer is almost here! Hard to believe! This year has gone fast and furiously! We have now reached over 2,000 children running through the program in the past three years!! We have expanded into a preschool curriculum, a special chemistry for girls only, additional GATE programs, & even some teen activities! We are currently developing ideas for NEXT school year! So far have tons of ideas from the children. Parents, what would you like to see in our curriculum? Please e-mail or call us with ideas - Remember. No idea is too far fetched! Curriculum for Fall 2006 through Spring 2007 will be 100% NEW!! No repeats! That puts us on a four year cycle of rotating curriculum. We may even expand for the fifth year as the children keep presenting us with new ideas!! And we have too much fun working on their ideas and turning those ideas into science enrichment labs! At this time we know the broad topics for next year include: Space, Marine Biology/Oceanography, Chemistry (beyond baking soda & vinegar), Physics and more in the line up. Our National Geographic certified underwater naturalists are bringing new ideas for the Ocean topic. We will include a mystery “who done it” and we are researching certain child-requested animals (They have some really far out requests!!). Please check our web site in late June for specific topics. We will continue the discount for those parents who pay for the full year by October 1, 2006. Registration will be limited at each school in order that we may continue to provide the very best in after school science enrichment programs. At this time, we do have some school registrations in house & will continue taking registrations throughout the summer. Encourage and keep the children investigating & experimenting all summer and we will see them in the Fall! On March 29, 2006, a total solar eclipse occurred when the new moon moved directly between the sun and the earth. The moon’s shadow will fall on the eastern tip of Brazil, speed eastward across the Atlantic, through northern Africa, across the Mediterranean, and into Turkey, when the moon completely blocked the sun, and the sun’s corona will was seen. If you did not get to see the eclipse live be sure to visit www.exploratorium.edu/eclipse/2006/index.html. This was an exciting event & will help stimulate science interest in your child! The Exploratorium is presented an overnight event with a live web cast & hands on activities. Spectrum of Science staff & many students attended this event. Check out pictures on our website at www.spectrumofscience.com Additional web coverage may be available at http://sunearth.gsfc.nasa.gov/eclipse/SEmono/TSE2006/TSE2006.html
Flea's can jump 130 times higher than their own height. In human terms this is equal to a 6ft. person jumping 780 ft. into the air. The blue whale can produce sounds up to 188 decibels. This is the loudest sound produced by a living animal and has been detected as far away as 530 miles. The Skylab astronauts grew 1.5 - 2.25 inches (3.8 - 5.7 centimeters) due to spinal lengthening and straightening as a result of zero gravity. The ears of a cricket are located on the front legs, just below the knee. Q. How much water does a camel's hump hold? A camel's hump does not hold water at all - it actually stores fat. The camel uses it as nourishment when food is scarce. If a camel uses the fat inside the hump, the hump will become limp and droop down. With proper food and rest the hump will return to normal. The hump is not used for water storage, but camels can go for long periods of time without water. They drink large amounts of water - up to 20 gallons at a time. This water is stored in the animal's bloodstream.
Be sure to visit our website for the next installment of the game questions (to be posted 5/1/06). Thanks for all the questions submitted. Keep them coming!! www.spectrumofscience.com
